Johnny Cash, one of the most influential country music singer-songwriters of all time, called Middle Tennessee his home as a resident of Hendersonville. With nine CMA Awards, 13 GRAMMY awards, and inductions into the Country Music and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame, Cash’s imprint on Nashville’s music scene is undeniable. His legacy lives on since his passing in 2003.

Known as the “Man in Black” for his all-black stage attire, this persona was more than just a costume. In 1971, Cash recorded the song “The Man in Black” as a protest, standing up for the rights of the poor, incarcerated, and other forgotten communities.
As a tribute to the life and legacy of Johnny Cash, Nashville SC has dedicated the 2023 Secondary jersey in his honor. This year, the Boys in Gold are wearing black.

This photo was taken around the time that Johnny Cash performed his live album "Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison" on January 13, 1968 for an estimated 1,000 prisoners.

On February 29, 2020, Nashville Soccer Club opened to a stadium of 59,069 fans. That night, the Backline Supporters Collective unveiled their first-ever MLS tifo featuring Johnny Cash in the iconic photo at San Quentin flipping off the camera, with the middle finger covered up by the Nashville SC crest.
Just a year later, the club began the design process for the 2023 Away Jersey, which was inspired by this moment. This began a collaborative process with Nashville SC, the estate of Johnny Cash, and adidas to tell the story of the life and legacy of the Man in Black.
